Kindey or Horseshoe Table- Please comment!

I need feedback from teachers on what your thoughts are regarding a kidney table vs a horseshoe table. I am planning on using part of a stipend I earned to purchase either type of table for small groups.  I pull small groups all the time in my classroom and I think one of these tables would work better than me sitting on the edge of a rectangular table with two students on each side and one on the other end.  My groups can vary from 1- 5 students.

For some background, I teach 7th grade math, so this table would be used for middle school aged kids. Typically when I pull a small group the students come with a pencil and exit slip, otherwise they might be working out problems on a whiteboard.  I use a whiteboard to model problems for them.

I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions about which table you think would work best and why. I have been doing some online research and people seem split on preference, so bonus if you teach actual middle schoolers (or upper elementary students) because they are much bigger than primary students.  TIA for any feedback!

  1. I teach 7th math as well and would love to get a kidney table for my room. I had one at my old school and I feel lost without it. It is perfect for small groups

  2. I wish I had room for a table like these! Our RTI teacher has a kidney table in her room and it works well for our 7th/8th graders. I've never seen a horseshoe table IRL, but it looks like it would be even better, especially if you have the room.

  3. I have a horse shoe table in my eighth grade classroom and LOVE IT!!! You can fit lots of students around the table depending on what size you buy. All the Grade 6,7,8 teachers at my school use the horse shoe table.

  4. I use a kidney table and love it. Also, the students write on the table using dry erase markers and it wipes right off.

  5. I use a horseshoe table in my classroom. I absolutely love it. Even my parapros use it to pull kiddos who need that extra help. I generally only put 4 kids at a time there, but I've fit up to 8. It's very easy for me to sit there in the middle and help each kid individually as needed all while making sure each of them is on task.

  6. KIdey table for me. It's not restricting in terms of movement. Young students like to wriggle around. - Layce of Mymathdone.com

  7. I dreamed of having a kidney table in my math classroom! Alas, it was more expensive than purchasing a discounted table from Sam's Club. I use a counter height table that seats up to six. My students love it! And I especially love the view I have from sitting a bit higher than my students. It is critical with large class sizes and students who are new to the workshop model. Enjoy your new table. :)

  8. Thank you so much everyone for the great feedback. I ended up ordering a kindey table for my classroom. It did not come in before the end of the school year so it will be new next school year. I promise to do a blog post showing you how it works for me. Thanks again.
